I don't see the point of having the same security mechanisms for my 63 year old father who believes everything he sees on the internet, and me who have grown up with computers to such an extent that I'm suprised one is not attached to me.

I don't want to spend time bypassing security measures that in practice offers me no security. Then it's pretty annoying that I have to spend even more time disabling these measures, and even if I appearantly have, they are still there.

Makes sense to me, but hey, at least it's working. None of these work for me. I cannot change Secutiry Settings and permissions either. Access is denied. Thumbs up! This file isn't showing read-only — PlanetUnknown. PlanetUnknown It was when I wrote this answer, on a machine with a fresh install of Windows It might not be anymore after some of the recent updates. I've quite literally tried all the solutions on the net and it was this!

On my windows8, hosts file isn't read-only. This applies to any firewall or antivirus you may have installed that has an option to lock editing of the hosts file e. This happend to me, and i was properly notified when i tried to erase the file :- , otherwise you only see "file in use".

Seems then that protecting the file is made by just openinig for editing in lock mode, so no one could write or erase it untill you tinywall release it. Since my zonealarm antivirus did not have a visible option to "lock hosts file" I thought it just didn't. But after disableing it on startup the hosts file was finally open for modification. If your firewall program does not show the lock option, it might still be locking it. The command helped me realize that editing using Notepad works but Sublime 3 doesn't for whatever reason.

By default, your user runs just the same as any other user would, as themself. Matt Clark Matt Clark 1, 3 3 gold badges 20 20 silver badges 34 34 bronze badges. Well, my user account says "Administrator", not "Administrative user". Regardless, I would like my user to be an "Administrator" rather than an "Administrative user", that shouldn't be impossible?

Doesn't keep windows from "protecting" me, even though I don't want it. I didn't notice the Windows 10 tag so perhaps my answer is incorrect. Do you see 'Full Control' for your user when you right-click the file and go to the Security tab?

I just tried it on Windows 7 and that works, perhaps Windows 10 behaves differently. I have also had this working in Windows 7, managed to set that up so that it didn't give me any hazzle. As far as I remember I have done the same on my Windows 10 computer, but I dont get the same result. The administrators group has full control of the file. But, when I give the Users group full control of the file, then I can save it. So I have an administrator account, but the access rights for the User group is what affects my privileges.

Marcus Storms Marcus Storms 21 1 1 bronze badge. The OP didn't. So why do you believe that his problem has anything to do with antivirus? I had the problem with Avira too. I just couldn't change hosts file like the file is already open by other program no Avira windows poped up. Disabling Avira real-time protection solved the problem for me. Another hacky-style approach is to launch cmd as an admin and then "notepad C Fazer87 Fazer87 UAC is already disabled.

As an IT professional I don't knowingly infect myself with malware.. The thing is, which is really annoying, that after setting myself as administrator, after disabling UAC, after making myself owner of the file, I am not allowed to edit a file on my computer without having to take an uneccessary detour. When I doubleclick a file, or save a file, I have already made my decision, I don't need any second-guessing from Windows, but even though I have taken measures not to, it still seems to happen.

Instead, you must save the file elsewhere like the Documents or Desktop folder. You'll be prompted with permission validation and will have to confirm overwriting the file. If you still have trouble saving the modified HOSTS file, check the file's attributes to see if it's been marked read-only. Right-click the file and select Properties to see the attributes.

Another option is to open your text editor program as an administrator so that the permissions are already applied to the editor. Then, saving the HOSTS file over the original can be performed without having to verify your admin credentials.

If you still can't save to the HOSTS file location, you probably don't have the correct permissions to be editing files in that folder. You should be logged in under an account that has administrative rights over the HOSTS file, which you can check by right-clicking the file and going to the Security tab. While this hierarchy might come in handy for regular use, like to block ads or certain malicious IP addresses, its functions also make this file a common target of malware.

By modifying it, malware can block access to antivirus updates or force you to a malicious website. Thus, it's a good idea to check the HOSTS file periodically or at least know how to remove false entries.

A much easier way to block certain domains from your computer is to use a custom DNS service that supports content filtering or blocklists. I think as part of its security it prevents malware or viruses diverting you to alternative sites. Took mysite of the list of trusted sites and it no longer checks and "corrects" my hosts file diversion. This can happen if there is, say, only one entry in the file, and when you ignore the comment-out text.

One problem missed in the discussion above is unqualified names names that do not include a period in the hosts file. Your network settings might kick in at that point and automatically add your own domain to the end of an unqualified domain.

Consequently the name might not resolve, or worse yet, resolve to a completely different machine. I had to look at properties and uncheck the "encrypt file" checkbox. My hosts file is ignored until I have a network connection on my Windows 7 laptop. Once I connect to a network, everything works as expected. Obviously, without a network I can't ping hosts etc.

It doesn't. Even after disconnecting it still looks up addresses OK, but between restarting the computer and first connecting to a network, it ignores the hosts file. Make sure that it whatever application is ignoring the hosts file is actually using Windows' DNS cache in the first place. For instance, the Chrome browser respects the hosts file, but has its own DNS cache that must be flushed separately from Windows' if the hosts file is updated.

Rather use "ping". I found solution at last.. But I need to repeat it, or else restart Chrome, every time I change the hosts file.

Did you check that it works correctly? If yes, your hosts file is fine and the problem is elsewhere. Basics Is your hosts file named correctly? It should be hosts and not host , etc. Is the extension correct? It should have no extension hosts not hosts. Did you follow the correct syntax? Did you accidentally prefix lines with a hash which indicates comments? Did you take care of all variants www. Lastly, terminate the file with a blank line. Registry Key There is a registry key specifying the location of the hosts file.

Permissions Sometimes there are issues with permissions on the file, the file attributes, and similar things. To recreate the file with default permissions: Create a new text file on your desktop. Copy and paste the contents of your current hosts file into this file in Notepad. Save the new text file and rename it to hosts. Last point is important: Copying works, moving doesn't.

If you can't see the hosts file, ensure you can see hidden and system files. Right-click on the hosts file and select Properties from the context menu. In the hosts Properties window, click on the Security tab. Examine the list of names in the Group or user names: box. Thus, it's a good idea to check the HOSTS file periodically or at least know how to remove false entries.
